Without family Coote joins Yubby
Big Willy gets to know new Yubbyster Tom Coote
Crusader captain (Tom) Coote was devastated to find himself let down by Father Ian and Brother Sam (Cheltenham Monastery) as well as Jack Edge and Father Phil (Shurdington Abbey), but his prayers were answered when Sam Elson and Tommo failed to materialise at South Park. Suddenly teamless Tom was in demand; with the team from the home of CliMAX - Yubby. He was soon very popular with his new team-mates when he top scored for Yubby in the tournament with 127 against Yubby's local rivals The Marrows. Ben Pigott shared in the 147 run partnership. Big Willy Green also scored heavily in the tournament and his best effort was 113 versus the Academics when he shared a match winning partnership with Coote of 161.
Brad Wrench took wickets throughout the tournament with his best return of 2 for 7 versus the Academics. Tom Frost was delighted with the wicket of Hatherley 'Extras' all-rounder Andy Perks and though Ducky Clarkson had a quiet tournament by his CliMAX standards, he captained his team well and took them as far as they were expected to go, coming off second best in a tough semi-final against the strong Sharks line-up.

Marrow survive stuffing
Despite conceding 277 runs to The Academics in the Group Stages of the Hatherley & Reddings CliMAX-Sixes tournament on Sunday 5th September and being restricted to 12 in reply, the Marrows made it through to the semi-finals due to skipper Nat Gregory's heroics scoring 111,249 against team-mates from Yubby. In the return fixture against The Academics Rich Bryan (53) made his maiden half-century in CliMAX supported by the dependable James Hicks (26). Flighty Kytey made sure of victory with two wickets in his opening over.
Young Guns did not have the fire power in the Semi-Final at North Park to beat The Marrows. Though Tom Hage (13) and JJ Rudge (30) batted well, The Marrows conceded just one MAXimum and the target of 45 could have been a piece of cake. Hicks (37) and Bryan (11) accumulated nine an over as required and when Hicks hit his second MAXimum with four balls to go The Marrows were in front and needed only to keep the threatening paceman JJ Rudge out for the rest of the over.
The sun disappeared on North Park and a dirty white ball substituted the red ones for the final against The Sharks. Again with quality bowling Marrows found MAXimums hard to find, though the boundary was crossed for fours 12 times by openers N at Gregory(43) and Dan Cross (31). One MAXimum each and no wickets secured a total of 82. The light was dropping fast as big fast bowler made one rear up at Rob Cotterell. Captain Gregory sportingly reminded his team of the safety factor and his bowlers kept a fuller length in response. Ali Bressington (30) played as though in the midday sun but Cotterell and Andy Edwards found it harder losing their wickets to Gregory and Adam Webb respectively. James Hicks took one unlikely catch, but those in the pavillion with infra-red glasses could see that his foot was on the boundary and the batter was re-called. When he repeated the feat moments later there was no argument. That left The Sharks needing 83 from the final over by Dan Cross. The Blockley opening bowler held his nerve and kept the score to 11, enabling Gregory to lift the Sullivan Trophy and The Marrows to be engraved on the plaque.
Cricket has never been so thrilling - Bravo for the coming of CliMAX!

Sharks swim downhill
Sharks captain Edwards stares at Yubby batter
After opening their CliMAX account with 1,111,138 runs in the first game against Baker's Krapistan, things could only go downhill for Edwards team dubbed favourites by the pundits before the H&R CliMAX-Sixes tournament last Sunday. Ali Bressington made an elegant 84 against Young Guns until JJ Rudge cleverly slipped a leg stump yorker in whilst the Painswick star was looking at his toes. Evans announced his arrival into the CliMAX community with 114 from 8 deliveries. But, despite amassing more points than any other team in the league stage, skipper Edwards was heard to comment that his team just needed to learn to win in time for the semi-finals. They duly obliged after Edwards himself claimed 2 for 17 against Yubby, his Sharks were set only 18 to find themselves in the final. James Harber set victory up with 1115 from the first over and then played defensively for the remaining four supported by Ed Evans.
The final was keenly fought by two teams with superb cricketing talent but hindered by the lack of light. The Marrows coped better and lost no wickets, whilst the wickets of Cotterill and Edwards left Bressington unable to repair the damage sufficiently to overcome The Marrows modest total of 82.

Krapistan lose Baker
Bakerless Krapistan
Quality wicketkeepers are invaluable in CliMAX where byes a penalised by free-hits. Captain of the Krapistan team, Craig Baker is Hatherley and Reddings first team keeper and was in the process of showing his brilliance standing up to a seam bowler in the first game on Sunday when a ball was edged through onto his mouth. Somehow he still completed the dismissal, but then had to rush from the arena with blood pouring from his mouth. It took a while to slow and only then could the Doctor see that it was only a fat lip that was bleeding. Baker bravely returned to his team for a defensive innings and a quiet time on the boundary, but after that was transported off the Accident and Emergency for a check up. This and a dental examination later gave the reassurance Craig and his fans were wanting. However without their inspirational leader Krapistan struggled in the tournament. They achieved victories but not many points and found themselves in a play off for 5th place. This they won at South Park.
Academic Campaign
Wrench watches Academic thrash Yubby bowler to the boundary
The Academics brought youthful enthusiasm to the CliMAX-Sixes tournament on Sunday. Mike Cupper selected the most promising cricketers in Cheltenham from the Academy that he coaches at with Callum Stewart. Ben Cupper produced some solid blows but maintained a straight bat in the process. Olly Perks, Fabian Chess, George Hill and L...Hage produced moments of breathtaking brilliance at South Park with help from H&R 'Extra' Team star Andy Perks. The most notable achievement was a score of 277 against the eventual tournament winners - The Academics. This was enough to secure a famous victory.

Gregory lifts Hatherley and Reddings CliMAX-Sixes Cup
Richard Stewart, Nathaniel Gregory, Janette Sullivan
Marrows Captain Nathaniel Gregory was presented with the CliMAX-Sixes Cup donated by Janette Sullivan on Sunday evening. Gregory is photographed with Janette and Richard Stewart, H&R CC Chairman and Groundsman. The tournament looked under threat from rain in the morning, but Stewart and his team worked tirelessly on the ground to make the event possible. The CliMAX community are indebted to Janette Sullivan and Richard Stewart, but also Gina Hage and Mrs Hill who helped to produce a wonderful tea and to Hatherley's own MadDog who learnt the art of CliMAX scoring and scored all the games at North Park, even when it was too dark to know what was going on! The few spectators who braved the bitterly cold day witnessed spectacular cricket with CliMAX records broken and games turning in an instance as can only occur in this form of the game.
Fireworks at South Park
Gregory gets another one over the line
Hatherley and Reddings CliMAX-Sixes got off to an explosive start in the league played at South Park on Sunday 5th September. Nat(e) Gregory became the first to go beyond a kiloMAX sequence hitting the last five balls from Ben Pigott's over out of the ground. Dan Cross had given him the strike with three from the opening delivery, but was unable to become the first megaMAX cricketer when he could only take a single from Duckie Clarkson's first ball. Understandably The Marrows opening pair played carefully for the remaining overs and consolidated on their partnership of 122,372!
Cupper Injury Scare
Captain Cupper of the Academics is devastated to announce to his fans that he has a knee injury and is looking doubtful for the H&R CliMAX-Sixes on Sunday. Advised against bowling and running he is contemplating keeping so as not to let his team down. He is desperate to play, loving the CliMAX format, but realises that he must not put his future at jeopardy by making too brave a decision. Last minute fitness tests are looking necessary.
Tom Coote is thought to struggling with his team, the Crusaders, with rumours that family members have defected. The mutiny may be around their acceptance of the youngest taking the reigns.
Manager of the U15s team David Selley is looking for players having found many of his protegies had signed up for other teams during his absence.
With all this going, there appears to be a great opportunity for players not already signed up to offer their services and then experience the ultimate cricketing thrill of CliMAX. Contact us if you are interested.

Big Willy still finding MAXimums
Will Green hoiks one over midwicket
Big Willy Green was the first kiloMAX cricketer and is pictured here plundering runs over the closest boundary at Adlestrop Park and can be expected to be a crowd pleaser at North or South Park on Sunday. He took vital wickets and bowled a tight over to peg back the Cotswold District League winners and help Ebrington to a nail biting victory on Sunday. He showed yet more versatility earlier donning the keeping gloves and proving an effective wicketkeeper - and that is a huge asset in CliMAX.
Elson on his way to Hatherley
Elson is tucked up but still gets it away at Adlestrop
Sam Elson has been selected for Yubby, the team from the home of CliMAX for this weekends CliMAX-Sixes tournament after a stubborn performance in the lower order for Ebrington against Adlestrop on Sunday 29th August. His contribution was vital to Ebrington achieving 163 which they successfully but narrowly defended at Adlestrop who failed to get a single from the last ball to secure their own victory. This followed a heavy night celebrating victory in the Cotswold District Leauge Division I the day before. Their attractive facilities in Adlestrop Park are featured in our Cricket Grounds Gallery.
Rory needed for CliMAX-Sixes
Rory accepts the applause after scoring 60 v Trowbridge
Rory McInnes-Gibbons is an exciting prospect for club cricket with the application and technique to succeed as a first team opener in the near future, but more than that he bowls handy medium pace with unnerving bounce from a high release point. It will be interesting to see how he adapts his game to the hustle and bustle of CliMAX and to the greater pressures that this format of cricket puts on players. We hope he makes it into the selection of one of our brave teams for next Sunday's tournament and the Shurdington Road ground.
Hatherley Second Team warm up for CliMAX-Sixes
Phil Edge's select band of cricketers nicked the West of England Premier League Glos/Wilts Division II from under Swindon's noses on Saturday. Going into this final game away at Trowbridge and level on average points with Swindon, H&R might have been disadvantaged not to have any of the Coote Crusaders available, but fine performances by youngsters Rory McInnes-Gibbons, Tom Hage, Ben Myatt and JJ Rudge saw them across the line with 20 points. Rory McInnes-Gibbons showed a straight bat and excellent patience to build a great half century, whilst even younger Tom Hage played a wonderful middle order innings of 39 with precise foot work and surprising power for his age. The captains contribution of 38 nurdles runs was a further delight, before Ben Myatt and JJ Rudge showed 'coach' Peter Gregory how to bowl seam, though the coach showed them how to bowl badly but still pick up wickets! Jack Edge and Rory McInnes-Gibbons finished the job off with final wickets to have home side losing by 67.
H&R wondered if 20 points would be enough and news that Swindon had won by 10 wickets, led to a quiet night with no celebration, so the skippers text the following morning was a joy to read - WE ARE THE CHAMPIONS!
Look out for Hage in JJ Rudge's Young Guns, Myatt in the Crusaders, though Edge's Phil and Jack have got cold feet and are considering soccer as a way of warming them up.
